When To Call An HVAC Professional
If you are experiencing problems with your air conditioning, when do you call a professional? After all, not every AC issue requires the help of a professional.
Check the Following on Your AC Unit
- Clean your unit. Debris and dirt in and around your air conditioner can make it less efficient, meaning it won’t cool your home as well, using up more electricity, too. Use a garden hose to wet it, get some professional cleaner, apply the cleaner, scrub or wipe as needed, and rinse off the unit. Be sure to turn the power off to your unit before cleaning.
- Check the thermostat. You’ll want to be sure that your air conditioner’s temperature is set properly. You also want to make sure it’s been switched from heating to cooling (as applicable). Not switching happens all the time; unfortunately, so does the feeling of embarrassment when the repair contractor hands you a bill for coming out to flip a switch.
- Check drainage tubes for obstructions. Blockages are one of the most common reasons homeowners call in the professionals, yet it’s also one of the easiest things to take care of on your own. Water that pools around or below your unit almost always is because a drainage tube is blocked. Check for dirt, algae, even ice. If you find something, clean or replace the tube.
Regular Maintenance to Eliminate AC Repairs
Replace your unit’s filter at least every three months. Doing so regularly will help keep your unit from gulping dirt and dirty air (the filter traps small air particles before they can make their way inside). Dirt can compromise your unit’s life, while forcing it to work harder to cool your home, probably resulting in a higher electric bill!
Speaking of “regularly,” engaging Lex Air Conditioning and Heating to perform routine maintenance on your air conditioning unit can help prevent sudden breakdowns. We provide annual maintenance visits and inspect your AC unit and ductwork, provide necessary upkeep. We also fix any maintenance or minor repair issues before they become big problems.
The best time for an annual maintenance visit? Spring (April and May). This way you’ll beat the predictable summer rush, also preventing the need to shut your unit down should it present issues in June, July and August.
